It's more amazing that the rest of the album that follows reveals no falloff in quality. Little wonder, then, that Musselwhite walked off with the BMA awards for "Album Of The Year" and "Traditional Blues Album Of The Year" in May.

And, as it turns out, "Church Is Out" was awarded BMA's "Song Of The Year." Just one listen to it and anyone woud find it hard to disagree with the accolades.

Like the man testifies, "Jump and shout...'cos church is out!"

Listen: Charlie Musselwhite "Church Is Out"

"One Track Mind" is a more-or-less weekly drool over a single song selected on a whim and a short thesis on why you should be drooling over it, too.

As authentic as the lines on his forehead and his droopy eyes, veteran bluesman Charlie Musselwhite gets better with age. (At 62, he's a respected survivor with dozens of albums to his credit.) On Delta ...

Pico, I'm thrilled to read this and thank you for the linkage. What a great song and album. I was listening some to Sanctuary last night. As an album, I prefer Delta because it's a more compact record. However... "The Neighborhood" from Sanctuary is one of my favorite songs ever. It's just a fabulous cut. In the same way Dylan has had a latter-day renaissance, Musselwhite has been great in his sixties as well.

"Church is Out" is one of my favorites on this album, but "Black Water" and "Just a Feeling" probably nudge it out just a bit. Great album, absolute legend.

I saw Charlie a couple of months ago at The Last Day Saloon in Santa Rosa, CA. What a great show he put on!

He really is an outstanding harmonica player and the new lead guitar player was just incredible!

When you get an opportunity to see someone like this at a small venue like the Last Day it really is something special!

Thanks for all your comments; I might as well revive this thread...I just heard "Church is Out" on KDVS (UC Davis or "UCD" is also known as University of California, Davis. Great radio station FM 90.3) and had to find who did it. Got to have more.

A great small venue is "The Palms" here in Winters, CA (near Davis)...many greats come here. Hope these guys get here soon.

    Thanks...
