Ol' Dirty Bastard dead at 35

O.D.B.

DAMN!!!

Rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard, one of the founding members of Wu-Tang Clan, collasped and died in a Manhattan recording studio.

O.D.B. had complained of chest pains before collapsing.

He was 35-years-young.

Just when the Wu was getting back on track...tragedy strikes.

Just damn...

Interesting how the obit in today's NYTimes couldn't say "Ol' Dirty Bastard", but only referred to Mr. Jones as O.D.B.

So was it the "Ol", the "Dirty" or the "Bastard" they couldn't print?

According to NYT style, shouldn't the deceased have been referred to as "Mr. Bastard"?

    Just sayin'.

So, does this mean when John Ashcroft is found dead in a motel with an eightball and a buttplug, the New York Times won't print his rap name of Stinkin' Rotten Cobnobbler?

I think the NYT was just distinguishing the rapper from the real Old Dirty Bastard -- Dick Cheney.

I couldn't stand his solo album - but the Wu was ruthless with him. As far as I know, he was not charged / convicted with any crimes - just a complete eccentric and fun with it.

Temple, ODB eventually did three years in the pen for a variety of crimes, some of them felonies. He was usually able to slip out of the trouble he got himself in for more than a decade, but eventually he did not pass 'Go.' Credit that to good lawyers. But, according to this article, what the man really need was good psychiatrists. The author says that people egged on a clearly psychotic person for the entertainment value. The piece is worth reading.

'Of course, to some of the 13 children he reportedly fathered, Jones, who collapsed and died Saturday at a New York City recording studio, was a child-support-avoiding absentee. He was also a crude misogynist prone to violent outbursts and gunplay...Jones' rap sheet was as cluttered and long as one of his meandering, speedy rhymes. He was charged with assault in 1993, and shot in the stomach a year later. Trouble dogged him through the '90s. He was arrested for failure to pay child support, drug possession, making terrorist threats, possession of body armor, assault, shoplifting and attempted murder. In 1998, he was shot again during an attempted robbery...His bizarre behavior made him rap's irrepressible clown prince. It also stemmed from mental illness and substance abuse that went untreated and in many ways was encouraged.' Houston Chronicle, 17.11.04
