I've been meaning to write about this for many months, but affairs of state take precedence over affairs of state. Or something.
Anyway, I got a copy of the British magazine Uncut back in March of 2002 (ahem, told ya), and it had a sampler CD. This one was titled "Sounds of the new West Vol 3" and had a lot of funky alt-country stuff on it. Some good. Some not so. But one little tune grabbed my attention, so I put it into my regular MP3 rotation.
Turn the page. Now, one day I am sitting back, grooving to the tune, when suddenly I hear, "I got a pocket full of rubbers and my homeboys do too." WHAT!? Waitaminute. I never heard that before. I guess I wasn't listening to the lyrics very carefully. Turns out the song is The Gourds cover of "Gin and Juice" by Snoop Dogg. Doh!
After I actually listened to the thing, I found it hysterical. The lyrics are the standard "get yer party on" rap stuff, but when the Gourds put it into a country setting, it becomes fall-on-the-floor funny. At least to me.
To make matters worse, now that the clue-mobile has finally caught up to me, I found out that this was already a big deal two years ago. Apparently, it was a huge hit on Napster, and there was some controversy because it kept getting attributed to Phish, instead. Whatevah.
So, there's yer critic for ya. Attention to detail, a specialty. Oy vey.
