How weak are the new releases this week? They're so weak that the American Idols Fantasia and Taylor Hicks are the best bets. Ms. Barrino's second album is the eponymous Fantasia. Likewise furthering the American Idol reputation for utter lack of creativity, the season five weiner's album is titled Taylor Hicks.
Ah, but it gets worse -a new Sonic Youth album Destroyed Room: B-Sides and Rarities. There have been few bands less worthy than Sonic Youth to get as big a critical reputation as they have- and that was 20 years ago when they were in their prime. However, there seem to be people who pride themselves greatly on their ability to talk themselves into liking utterly unlistenable crap. Personally, I'd listen to William Huang before I'd put on Sonic Youth. But if you're one of those folks who gain a sense of intellectual or spiritual superiority from listening to the most aggressively tuneless, dissonant caterwauling you can find, a collection of Sonic Youth B-sides should be just the thing. Enjoy.
