New Album Releases, Week of 12-13-2005

Part of: New CDs

Billie Holiday The Complete Verve Studio Master Takes is a six CD set. They put out a 10 disc set previously with outtakes and such. This looks to be about half the length- and probably thus twice the listenability.

This week American Idol also-ran Bo Bice puts out his debut album, wishfully titled The Real Thing. For starters, anyone interested in music should laugh heartily at any such label being attached to anyone associated with a faux-talent show like this. The fakeness is only worse when the corporate cheese whiz is presented as "Southern rock," which genre is particularly incompatible with this tv contrivance.

Oh, but that's not bad enough yet. From the AMG preview of this album, "Bice has been retooled as a generic modern rocker, partway between Nickelback and Bon Jovi." How many shades of awful does this sound like?

Look, anyone buying any American Idol related record needs to be put to the lash immediately, but this is a step beyond. Anyone buying a Bo Bice album is just asking for a trip to Camp Mimi- which might start becoming awfully crowded, as Amazon lists this in their top 10 sellers currently.

Beck puts out Guerolito this week, which consists of remixes of the whole album from last spring- as if that mediocrity needed to be re-mixed, re-packaged, and re-sold.

If we make it through December, maybe we'll get some new real music in the new year.

Here's the complete list of this week's major new releases, courtesy AMG:

Beck Guerolito Interscope
Indie Rock, Alternative Pop/Rock, Alternative Dance

Bo Bice The Real Thing RCA

Anthony Hamilton Ain't Nobody Worryin' So So Def/Zomba

Unreformed hawkish Hoosier hillbilly Al Barger runs the still squeezin' down the psychodelic Kentucky moonshine at More Things. What with the paranoid religious visions, the Pentecostal music, visions of God and anarchy running amok and such, somebody …

I am going to have to have that Lanegan/Campbell EP.

Beck's Guero was a damn fine album- one of the best of 2005.

If'n you like Beck's record, you would probably lose your mind over "You Like My Song" by Geoff Reacher. Hop over to his website and download the whole EP for free.

I have this sneaking suspicion I am being mocked, Generalissimo. Keep in mind I have also sworn allegiance to doing The People's work.

Guero has been underappreciated. It's a shame. I think it is a fabulous album.

As I understand it, the Lanegan/Campbell EP is sort of an advance of a full-length album to be released early 2006.

I was confused when I saw this EP because I thought they were doing a full album. Now, after a bit of research and web surfing, I think I understand. I will, of course, still need both.
