New Album Releases, 8-1-2006: DMX, Kill Hannah

Part of: New CDs

There's absolutely not one damned thing in new music this week that looks like it would be likely worth even a passing listen. The biggest name release is DMX's Year of the Dog Again. This opus apparently breaks artistic ground by exploring the theme of women as bitches, and also the popping of caps into the asses of gang-bangers.

I've seen some good buzz on Kill Hannah's Until There's Nothing Left of Us. If you've just got a fetish for the new, you could try that.

Meantime, there are always the re-issues and compilations. Rhino has a single disc Buck Owens collection that'd be a likely starting place if you don't have any, 21 #1 Hits: The Ultimate Collection.

There's also an Elvis Presley r&b collection. Obviously they have to keep finding ways to re-process the Elvis catalogue. If you're going to do that, looking for stylistic themes like this is better than the 200th randomly selected hits collection.

Also, there some groovy-sounding jazz re-issues from Dizzy Gillespie and Billie Holiday, among others.

Unreformed hawkish Hoosier hillbilly Al Barger runs the still squeezin' down the psychodelic Kentucky moonshine at More Things. What with the paranoid religious visions, the Pentecostal music, visions of God and anarchy running amok and such, somebody …
