New Album Releases, 7-3-2007: Velvet Revolver, Kelly Rowland, John Coltrane at Newport

Part of: New CDs

I don't really care much about any new music I'm seeing on the list this week, which is a good excuse to highlight a promising sounding John Coltrane re-issue, My Favorite Things: Coltrane at Newport recorded in 1963 and 1965. Besides re-mastering, it contains a bonus track. Note that two of the seven songs are "My Favorite Things."

Velvet Revolver has a second album this week, Libertad. Look, this band is Guns 'n Roses minus Axl Rose, and Weiland is no Axl. But then, neither is Axl these days. So what's Slash to do with himself? But Guns minus Axl is approximately the same as the Stones without Mick Jagger, ie the Expensive Winos. Hey, if it keeps the boys off unemployment and off the streets that's enough.

Destiny's Child Kelly Rowland delivers Ms. Kelly.

Unreformed hawkish Hoosier hillbilly Al Barger runs the still squeezin' down the psychodelic Kentucky moonshine at More Things. What with the paranoid religious visions, the Pentecostal music, visions of God and anarchy running amok and such, somebody …
