NPR (National Public Radio) is amazing. They've introduce me to more music than I can count... on one hand, anyway. One Sunday, as I was driving home from church, I heard the last 20 minutes of a report on a composer named Philip Glass. Numberous things they said sparked my interest. For instance, he is well known for his ability to be very repetitious within a song. Where most composers would repeat a bar of music, say, 4 times, Glass will repeat it 20 times. For some reason this stuck with me and the next time I was at Barnes and Noble, his name caught my eye on several of the featured cds.
I came home from B&N with this cd, The Origional Motion Picture Soundtrack to Naqoyqatsi composed by Philip Glass. As most of you know, the origional soundtrack is not a collection of songs by various popular artists, it is a score for the movie that serve as the audio, musical voice of the film.
Now, I have not seen the film. It is, in fact, the 3rd film in a three part series, so I would have to catch up a bit before even considering it. However, I could still identify with the music. It has a dark, ominous sound. It hits the mood on the head with the opening song, where low dark vocals chant repeatedly "Naqoyqatsi... naqoygatsi."
It is not the sort of cd I could listen to and just zone out to. It does, however, provide great background music when I'm online bumming around or doing something active.
peace.

Jacob,
I haven't seen Naqoyqatsi yet either, but I reviewed Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi, the first two movies in the trilogy for Blogcritics when they were released on DVD back in October.
The first of those films, Koyaanisqatsi, is an astonishing piece of cinema, and well worth seeing.
Regards,
Ed
