Mychael Danna, Jeff Danna - A Celtic Tale: The Legend of Deirdre

If at times this CD reminds one of a movie soundtrack, there is good reason. Mychael Danna has scored major motion pictures such as Vanity Fair, Bounce, and Girl, Interrupted, and brother Jeff Danna has scored A Wrinkle in Time, Resident Evil: Apocalypse and O. A Celtic Tale, inspired by the Irish legend of Deirdre of the Sorrows, is a haunting, dreamlike blend of Uillean pipes, whistle, fiddle, and the plaintive soprano voice of Krysia Kocjan. What do two Canadians of Italian ancestry know about Celtic music? As it turns out, plenty. One would swear, upon listening to this recording, that they were born and bred on the Emerald Isle. Standout pieces include "The Child Deirdre" and "The Drowning Plains," though, to be honest, it is hard to narrow down a favorite, as this CD is truly an ensemble, best enjoyed in its entirety. A Celtic Tale is also available with accompanying narration by Fiona Ritchie, host of NPR's popular Celtic music show, The Thistle and Shamrock. If you enjoyed the music of Braveheart and Titanic you will never take this CD out of heavy rotation.

Dana, how nice to see a review of this very lovely CD. "The Drowning Plains" is my favorite track and is quite simply one of the prettiest pieces of music I've ever heard. Tugs at the heartstrings, too...
