I still remember the first time I heard Shai Hulud. I was sitting in an old friends dorm room at Bethel College in Northern Indiana. It was the biggest musical wake-up call of my life. I had found out what hardcore meant. It was when I truly understood the meaning behind the music.
Several years have past and, while “Hearts Once Nourished With Love and Compassion”, Shai Hulud’s first musical offering has helped to tide me over, I will have to admit—it’s about freakin’ time.
Well, here is the good news—after much ado, and tons of rumors—the new Shai Hulud offering is out on Revelation Records and it is entitled, “That Within Blood Ill-Tempered”. Oh, and did I mention that it is really good. Not only has it lived up to the incredible hype, but it has surpassed it. The rich vocals, the melodic mayhem and the precise drumming are all back—and they have brought with them incredible lyrics and awe inspiring artwork.
Yes, the new Shai Hulud is an intricate piece of artwork filled with references to misanthropy and desolation. It is a dark, honest, soul searching album and it doesn’t try to hide it. Overall, this disc is about as flawless as I have seen in the world of hardcore. I almost gave up on seeing this album in my local neighborhood hardcore CD store. Thank God it saw the light of day, as it is going to go down as one of those disc’s that helped to change the face of hardcore music. A spectacular effort brought to you by the good folks at Revelation—bravo, ladies and gentleman, bravo.
