Music's biggest night isn't over when the last award is handed out, not by a long shot. For the second year in a row, The Grammy Celebration Party will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center immediately following The 48th Annual Grammy Awards. The invitation-only event will be attended by Grammy winners and nominees, music industry executives and celebrities who attend the live telecast.
Commenting on the after-awards celebration, Neil Portnow, President of The Recording Academy, said,
Music's Biggest Night is an international extravaganza that celebrates the year in music, but the festivities don't end there. The evening continues with winners, nominees, VIPs, Academy members and enthusiastic music lovers at our Grammy Celebration, an elegant soiree where contemporary cuisine, distinctive design, and top-notch entertainment are the best way to top off a spectacular day. We never want Grammy night to end.
The Grammy Celebration Party will feature an all-star lineup of live entertainment including Earth, Wind & Fire with special guests Sleepy Brown, Will.I.Am (The Black Eyed Peas); and Big &Rich featuring Cowboy Troy. The event's menu will feature more than 70 buffets with international fare and such desserts as turtle bars, mini-banana cream pies, apple galette, winter sundaes, crispy rice pudding, and an assortment of ACM's famous cookies. Presented by Heineken, the party will also will feature wines and spirits provided by Patrón Tequila, Belvedere Vodka, Pyrat Rum, Forest Glen Wines and Domaine Laurier Champagne.
The Recording Academy has partnered with gifting company Distinctive Assets to create a specially designed area where guests will be able to preview luxury products such as a Privia digital piano package provided by Casio; his and her Oceanus and G-Shock watches; free Lasik surgery from Dr. Kerry Assil; a spring purse collection from Elliott Lucca; two tickets to the PAC 10 basketball finals in March, and a Verizon package including a Gateway laptop computer, just to name a few. Every guest in attendance will receive a parting gift courtesy of S Factor.

Definitely, but there have been some stellar moments (I'm not a Mariah fan, particularly, but she was the best I've ever seen her tonight; Paul McCartney with Jigga and Linkin Park was just wonderful!; Bruce's solid "Diamonds and Dust" followed by a succinct "Bring 'em home!") and some, er, not-so-stellar moments (I loved Chris Martin's enthusiasm, but the voice wasn't there, and what was with Sly Stone?). And the surprises - Green Day getting Record of the Year? Righteous! Kelly Clarkson beating out Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Sheryl Crow (and she deserved 'em) and not thanking American Idol... Steve Lillywhite getting Non-classical Producer of the Year... bassist Randy Jackson's hat... and the candor of Bono during U2's big, big night (sorry, Mariah)... Cool. Could only be cooler if the Grammys meant something...

Among the honored dead (NOT all rock stars, but all musicians; compiled with help from Dead People Server): Luther Vandross, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Chris Whitley, "Wicked" Wilson Pickett, Sammi Smith, Jimmy Griffin (from Bread), Lou Rawls, Shirley Horn, Link Wray, John Raitt (Broadway star and Bonnie's dad), Chris LeDoux, Bobby Short, Robert Moog, Skitch Henderson, Birgit Nilsson.
They actually missed a few: Doobie Brothers drummer Keith Knudsen, session drummer Michael Botts, session multiinstrumentalist Jon Clarke, Bryan Harvey (from House of Freaks).

It seems The Recording Academy decided to put the "Show" back into the award show this year. There were so many really great performances that Natalie Davis already highlighted pretty well.
Since it is my understanding that Clarkson held the album until she was out from under Simon Cowell and the American Idol franchise, I didn't find it all that surprising she didn't mention them. Maybe not proper (They really are at least partially responsible for where she is), but not surprising.
Scott - Clarskon's and U2's album came out so late in 04, they missed the submission process for the 05 Awards, making them eligible this year.

The "In Memoriam" roll missed Martin Denny, Herb Ellis, Derek Bailey, Spencer Dryden, among omissions that I noticed immediately. Didn't one of the guys from Foghat die last year as well?

Scratch that comment about Herb Ellis dying -- I thought that I'd remembered that, but internet digging around hasn't yielded an actual report of demise. I was probably thinking of Hank Garland. The others are, sadly, legit, though, including Bailey, who died on Xmas.
I'd also add other notable 2005 passings that my morbid mind pulled up when I was trying to remember musicians who died: Pierre Moerlen, drummer with Gong and Mike Oldfield; Luc Ferrari, electronic composer; Paul Pena, composer of "Jet Airliner" and subject of the film "Genghis Blues"; "Biscuit" Turner from the Big Boys; Niels-Henning Oersted Pedersen, Danish jazz bassist extraordinaire; Jim Capaldi of Traffic;
I've only just now heard that Elton Dean (Soft Machine, Robert Wyatt)died yesterday, as well.
Of course, from a telecast that limited its jazz content to Christina Aguilera caterwauling sans dynamics over Herbie Hancock, and otherwise featured absolutely no other non-pop music, I wouldn't expect any mention of more "fringe" musicians from the non-pop world, anyway.

That is infuriating, and as nice and polite and just a good guy that Paul is this should make him mad, very mad. I can't see any court in the world giving Heather that much of PAULS MONEY!!!!!!!!!!
