Let me be up front. I am probably not the right guy to review this EP. Woodale doesn't play the music that I am a big fan of. However, I am up to being open minded about whatever arrives on my doorstep, so I gave it a couple of run throughs, and I think I can honestly say I don't care for it. It's a brand of pop-rock that is mellow, doesn't take chances, and ultimately blends in with what you would here on pop radio.
Now, I won't hide the fact I don't like it, but that doesn't mean it isn't good. I can hear you now, "Of course it doesn't, I love them and this writer is dumb." Well, maybe some of you are thinking that, others have probably thought that of me for a long time, but hear me out. I know what I like, but I can also respect well crafted music from bands that I may find less than enthralling.
Woodale is one of those bands that has the potential of playing well on mainstream radio. Sure, they would blend in with the rest, but they have a crisp, clean sound that would be sure to find an audience. They sort of remind me of a more laid back version of Anberlin or Yellowcard, also bands I don't care for all that much.
The music is smooth, mellow, and very well produced. Dare I admit that it was downright catchy at times? The well written melodies and nicely layered sounds had a way of digging themselves into my head to the point of humming along. That is, before I realized just what I was doing and shook those thoughts out of my head. That is what I mean by this being a good album, despite my dislike of the style.
In the end, if you are into catchy pop rock, then this is a band you may want to keep your eye on. They have a sound that will dig itself into your head, whether you want it to or not, and attempt to take up residence in the dark recesses of your mind, then open the windows letting in the upbeat pop flavor in to infect your brain. If that is something you can live with, go ahead and take a look at this release, otherwise there is always the new Type O Negative album....
