Downing has enjoyed two decades- long career in R&B, finding even more success in the U.K. His blend of old school and contemporary jazz, without any hip-hop touches or explicit come-ons, may not receive as much radio airplay. But fans of neo-soul will enjoy Classique, mainly for Downing's obvious commitment to keep 70s soul alive. Smooth jazz aficionados will also appreciate the smooth treatment he gives to some classic—and more obscure—soul tracks as well as his own compositions. His warm voice is perfectly suited for White and Pendergrass-style romantic music. For longtime fans, Downing's latest release marks his return to full health after battling polymyositis, a disorder causing weakness in joints and muscles. Classique proves that his voice has remained unaffected.

Classique may not be groundbreaking, but it provides a reminder of the power and emotion of classic soul.
