Music Review: We Shot the Moon - A Silver Lining

After the disappointing death of the San Diego-based band, Waking Ashland, fans should be relieved to find front man Jonathan Jones hard at work with his successful second band, We Shot the Moon. The beautiful piano-influenced melodies of Waking Ashland have carried over into the music of We Shot the Moon, along with the indie-pop vocals of Jones. The recent release of their second album, A Silver Lining, showcases Jones at his best, along with the three other members of We Shot the Moon. They have created an album that is both unique and appealing to listeners of both the indie and mainstream crowds.

Fans of piano rock bands like Jack’s Mannequin and the Fray will love A Silver Lining. Think Boys Like Girls meets Coldplay. The album includes the perfect combination of punk, indie, and pop influences. We Shot the Moon truly creates a colorful ambiance that allows the listener to get lost in their music. Perhaps it is the mature quality of Jones’ vocals or the mesmerizing piano tunes that truly places We Shot the Moon is a step above many other bands geared toward similar, youthful audiences.

Fans will find that listening to A Silver Lining is a completely refreshing experience. The lyrics are both relate-able and completely clean, so listeners of all ages can enjoy the catchy tunes. Favorite and completely radio-worthy tracks on the album include: “In Good Time” and “Woke Her Up.” The band’s first single off the album, “Red Night” makes for an interesting choice because it is much edgier than the overall sound exuded by the band. However, this only further showcases the band’s ability to reach a wide audience.

"It’s very over-driven, and that’s new for us. It’s a complete rock song, with more guitar riffs,” Jones said in a statement regarding the first single. “In the past, the riff stuff was done more on piano, so, it’s us branching out, and going in a slightly different direction. I think it may hint at the future sound of this band…depending on what the response is.”

The album is available online now and in-stores November 2009.
