Music Review: The Fast Camels & The Goldenhour - Page 2

Part of: Eurorock

Yet this isn’t just a trip back to trip-land. The band also mesh in some fine power-pop chords, and driving riffs, that bring you back to the now. Other highlights have to include the excellent upbeat “Can You See Me?”, the trippy “The Hump” complete with little nods to summer days in the sixties, the totally retro “Comforting Things” and the album’s opener “50 Things On Your Mind”.

Having said that, the Britpop visitation, that is “Big Daddy Smyth” has to be mentioned too. “Privately Insane” (an excellent epitaph), “Gone”, and “The Nobgoblin” all maintain the album’s style. One of the best comes last with “Der Nazi Tea” which brings it all to an all too soon end.

Fear not album number two is on its way and I for one won’t be missing it.

The Goldenhour – Beyond The Beyond
What is it about Scotland that makes for great songwriting? Backing up that last statement just think of Teenage Fanclub, Daniel Wylie founder of the Cosmic Rough Riders, to name but two. You can now add in The Goldenhour.

There are two excellent albums to catch up on if, like me, you missed them first time out. First came 2003’s Beyond The Beyond, and two years later they gave us Always In The Now. Both come with huge doses of compulsive jangling guitars, huge whale catching hooks, and song-writing that really deserves to be heard.

Beyond The Beyond opens with two killers “Until I see You Again”, and “Mindreader”. In truth this level of sun-shining brilliance is maintained throughout with very few pauses amid the glow.

The equally catchy title track leads to a highlight in “Fading Out”. I can speak with authority about this track because I just can’t stop playing it. Like some demented typist I just have to hit the button again and again.

“I’m Not Lonely”, and “When Will I Find My Place” are all chiming guitar and infectious chorus. I just love the feel good sixties vibe of “Come On!”, another one played to death by yours truly.
