Music Review: The Bell - Make Some Quiet

Make Some Quiet is The Bell’s debut and I just can’t help but make some noise about it. Bad pun? Maybe. Good music? Definitely.

Dylan Magierek the CEO of their recording label, Badman Recording Company says “The Bell harkens back to a time when you were first discovering bands that acted like the ideal soundtrack to your post-teenage life. We think of Echo & the Bunnymen, House of Love, and The Cure… on our trips down good memory lane.”

While those aren’t necessarily the bands that I’ve spent my post-teenage years listening to I can however see certain similarities between The Bell and The Cure. A more modern counterpart in my eyes would be Interpol or even She Wants Revenge. What these bands share is that emotional lead vocalist, who is not quite monotone and hits you right in the gut.

the bell“I Am History” is the first single off the album and it’s one of my favorite. It’s a good introduction and it hooks you for the rest of the album. “I was old when I came to life/ But far to too young not to realize/ What life wouldn’t hold for me/ All because of biography/ Suddenly I realize I am the one no one can see/ Suddenly when no one knows I will go down in history.” I just love those lines and this is definitely a song that gets suck in the head.

“On and On” is another favorite. While the song is about selling out (“Sell out no time to think/ Stuck in a pastel colored dream/ Your boss is the marketing team.”) it’s the chorus that of this one that gets me every time. “On and on it breaks my heart/ The way that you sound/ On and on it breaks my heart/ The way you run around/ Wasting away on the radio waves/ No one knows just way you say.”

I am an old fan of Echo & the Bunnymen, Psychedelic Furs, the Chameleons as well as current fan of Interpol and these guys are definitely smack dab in that category. I just downloaded a few tracks today and really like them. I don't care that the Bell sound like these other bands. It's just fun music.
