I was browsing through my blog feeds over the weekend when I spotted the first song from the soundtrack to Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch posted in several places. The track was a reworking of the Eurythmics song “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” sung by the film’s star, Emily Browning. I thought, "Hey, that looks interesting."
I started to listen, and goosebumps immediately rose on my arms. I knew I had to check out the rest of the album as soon as possible.
The soundtrack to Sucker Punch is sinister, dark, and awesome. The fact that the album is composed entirely of reworked songs plays off the film’s premise: Browning’s character, Babydoll, escapes the pain of her life by creating a reality of her own, building fantastic versions of what she already knows.
I can only imagine what kind of crazy action we’ll see in the film itself, but if these grinding guitars and tripping beats are any indication, it’s going to be intense.
Other tracks feature artists like Icelandic singers Björk and Emilíana Torrini, and English rockers Skunk Anansie. There is an excellent mash-up of Queen and Armageddon in “I Want It All/We Will Rock You.” The album even tackles the Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows” with a capable cover by Alison Mosshart and Carla Azar. Finally, actors Carla Gugino and Oscar Isaac lend their voices to Roxy Music’s “Love Is the Drug,” a track with obvious musical-theater roots.
Browning’s airy, timorous vocals are a standout on the album. Her tracks are delicate and poignant, a stark contrast to the rest of the gritty, thunderous rock songs. If you have to download just one track from the album, I would recommend “Asleep” (originally by the Smiths), where Browning is set against a soft piano and plaintive strings.
The Sucker Punch soundtrack is set for release on March 22. Sucker Punch comes to theaters March 25.
