Certainly Love’s Dying Wish represents a slight departure from where the first album left off. It is an effective combination of the heavier side of contemporary melodic rock, which taps into both Harnell’s and Karlsson’s undoubted strengths, but also has a darker, moodier side. The whole is extremely well mixed by Tommy Hansen who captures some fine performances from the band, particularly the pairing of Harnell and Karlsson. The song writing is extremely strong with some powerful melodic rock hooks resulting in a fine album.
The opener “End of Alone” sets the scene well with some dark elements successfully mixed in with some retro sounding AOR - moody melodic rock would be another way of describing it. The title track itself is a superb example of what the band can produce and is a brilliantly evocative track with edgy guitar and Harnell at his timeless best. “Unknown Superstar” contains a memorable Karlsson guitar break and chorus that lifts the track towards the exceptional. “Hide”, “Building a Wall”, and “Hello are you listening?” are all melodic rock at its best. The edgier “Beautiful Disaster” and the final track “This Close” both stand out in a strong set list that will hopefully encourage Starbreaker to add more of the same to their catalogue.
If you are a fan of memorable melodic rock then this Starbreaker album is a must have. When talents such as these get together and are hungry to produce an album to add to their already impressive careers to date then it is time to listen.
