Something strange has just happened here at Eurorock. My wife Debbie peered over my shoulder at the cover of the new E.P. by She’s A Boy and said “oh, I really like those boots.” The fact that they were being worn by a donkey didn’t seem to get noticed.
Welcome to the somewhat bizarre world of She’s A Boy. In the words of the Rolling sage, please allow me to introduce them. Perhaps the best way to do this properly is to lift directly from their MySpace page. Here they tell us of how they came about.
“One night in a club, four men face their destiny. They fall for the same woman who wears one of the tightest, tackiest skai dress ever. One after the other, they try to impress her but fail. To win this beautiful trophy our boys start using cheap shots at each other. But, there is one thing though: They find out the woman has something others don’t. She’s a Boy.”
What can you do in such a situation? You form a band of course. A short but eventful while later the manager of Cage The Elephant spotted them. Then producer/engineer Steve Fitzmaurice (U2, Depeche Mode, Tears For Fears, among others) saw them playing live at their first ever London gig.
Together they decided to self release an E.P. to introduce themselves to the unsuspecting world. She’s A Boy the band and single arrive.
It seems like the word is well and truly out already as they now boast an impressive number of visitors on MySpace and viewings on You Tube. On both you will find the band, complete with fashion donkey, in their collective glory to help you suss them out. It’s worth the effort, trust me.
The E.P. has four tracks which kick-off with the single “They Won’t Tear Us Apart.” With its sensuous bass line She’s A Boy open it out, hooking you in on a horribly infectious riff. “We won’t be waiting for no-one” they sing in a way that you know they mean. With this you realize that this is a band that are going to do it all very much their own way and will, of course, be all the better for it.
