Anyone not listening to Robyn should start now. Her new album, Body Talk Pt. 1, is a well-executed confection of pop and hip-hop that cannot be missed.
Seriously, give this woman a chance. And, don’t write her off because she’s blonde-headed and singing dance and pop music. Lately, it seems that everyone cruising Youtube and message boards are accusing female singers of copying the over-dominating Lady Gaga, simply because she is the latest craze. But, before you say that about Robyn, consider her credentials.
Robyn has been on the scene since 1994 when she was signed to RCA records. Her first album, Robyn Is Here, was released in 1996. She managed to gain international popularity, starting in her native Sweden and spreading to the U.K. and the rest of Europe. She even had several hits in the U.S. during the 90s with “Show Me Love” and “Do You Know (What it Takes).” Robyn has been topping charts internationally ever since she came out 16 years ago, and her music has been featured in movies and television shows; she’s even toured with Madonna.
She has stayed true to herself throughout the years, even parting with her record label when artistic differences arose. Robyn created her own label, Konichiwa Records, and produced music on her own; and, she continued to make hit after hit. This rich career has led up to the release of her new record, Body Talk Pt. 1 last week.
Body Talk Pt. 1 is so great because it manages to balance on the tight rope between sounding original and radio-ready. Robyn knows how to make a hit; you’ll find lots of bass and electric glitter on this album. However, Robyn’s unique personality and vocal talent lends originality to her music as well. It’s the short, platinum-blonde hair, it’s also her every girl, R&B tinged vocals, and its definitely the pure and seemingly humble self-confidence that comes out in her delivery. It also helps that she has found a way to seamlessly combine Dance, Pop, and Hip-Hop influences, a feat that’s hard to pull of right.
