Music Review: Reggae Gold 2007 - Treasures of the Caribbean

The latest annual release of Reggae Gold continues the tradition of the Caribbean based label VP, with their yearly picks of the hottest island grooves. VP Records have established a cornerstone in the house of reggae music, as their series of reggae compilations have gone on to become highly anticipated releases. For many up and coming reggae, dance hall, and Caribbean music artists, getting picked to appear on a Reggae Gold album means you have officially made it. Reggae Gold is the number one reggae compilation for good reason and to appear in the line up is a highly sought after prize.

The theme to this years release is Caribbean treasures, as VP leans on the popularity of this years Pirates of the Caribbean release. With such a suitable launch pad, the compilation is set to explode onto the world with new grooves. This years RG features music from Jah Cure, Tessanne, Mavado, Morgan Heritage, Sean Paul, and many more!

The CD also features a bonus DVD, complete with artist interviews, a guided tour through the nightlife of Kingston Jamica with tons of dance hall celebrities and music dens featured, and the model casting call and photo shot for the gorgeous Reggae Gold album cover. Fellas, trust me, the CD is worth the money for that alone, as we get to follow the lovely cover girl through her grueling photo shoot.  Visually, the extra DVD manages to insure it will be viewed instead of tossed like so many other DVD extras.

Reggae Gold 2007 is tight as ever, with its excellent choice of song sequencing giving the album a rounded feel. Reggae Gold starts off with a bang, kicking off with Sean Paul’s club banger “Watch Them Roll” then sliding into Mim’s super hot Blackout remix of “This Is Why I’m Hot,” with Junior Reid and Cham. They take it to the yard with “Top Shotta Never Miss” and “Last Night” from Mavado, and “Bad From Me Born” by Munga.
