Sometimes we all need to escape from the all too serious world of reality. Sometimes you just want to play some music that just makes you feel good. Plastic Heroes are perfectly named with a wink and a nod towards those that take it all too seriously. They have come up with an album that will brighten even the most obsessively miserable people’s lives. Escape The Lower End (Bongo Beat Records 2008) is exactly that, an escape into some wonderfully infectious, uplifting, glam, power-pop tunes that will have your day looking a much brighter place.
Plastic Heroes are a London based band consisting of the voice and guitars of Marc Olivier, the bass and backing vocals of Simon Nelson, and drums by Gautier Quehen. Okay let’s get the influences up front and out of the way: The Kinks, The Beatles, David Bowie, The Troggs, even rather ridiculously Blondie. It is vaguely punk. Iit is colourful, addictive, annoyingly catchy and great, great fun. Marc Olivier knows exactly what makes a good song come alive and he has listened and learned well combining the best of all these influences with his own undeniable style and finesse.
Plastic Heroes is not only a band name it is a concept of what they are all about, poking two fingers up at the oh-so self-obsessed world of five minute celebrity, instant fame, ego, and obsession that we all seem surrounded by. Marc Olivier explains "A rock star, a pop star…ha-ha. I never saw them as real heroes compared to what some people do in their lives. I see them more as the plastic version of a hero, the kind that can break quite easily". Whilst conveying that through their joyous songs, they never once start to fall into their own trap and begin to take themselves seriously in the process. They even look the part: early Kinks mixed with the Stones with a bit of wide boy Mod chucked in.
