Music Review: NeedToBreathe - The Outsiders

Part of: Reviews in Brief

The Outsiders, that is a name that in many ways can be used to describe NeedToBreathe. From growing up in a rural South Carolina town with virtually no local music scene; to being a band that is attempting to carve their niche in the General and Christian music markets; to being a band that creates great music without trying to fit into a specific genre.

The Outsiders is NeedToBreathe's third release on Atlantic/Fervent Records is one of the strongest albums released this year. Currently airing on radio is the thought provoking and folk fused "Something Beautiful" and the gospel tinged "Lay em Down."

Brothers Bear and Bo Rinehart team together once again and have written an album with compelling stories of love ("Let Us Love," "What You’ve Done To Me") and hope ("These Hard Times," "Garden"). The diversity of song’s musical styling is the strength and core of this record as every song has a unique musical flare from the Boogie Woogie Blues tinged "Girl From Tennessee" to the somewhat biographical anthem "Through Smoke."

Perhaps the most captivating song on the record is "Stones Under Rushing Water," a ballad featuring Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek) which makes you feel as though you are right in the middle of the discussion and makes you feel the heartbreak along with them.

All in all, The Outsiders is one of those rare records that has something for everyone regardless of musical taste and will become a favorite in your CD changer or iPod. Once this CD starts gaining traction and their reputation continues to build, NeedToBreathe won’t be The Outsiders any longer.
