Music Review: Magni Asgiersson - Magni

I find this newly released compilation of material The Iceman, Magni Asgiersson, has offered on ITunes to be a lovely introspective piece. It feels and sounds like a body of work created by a man going through big changes in his life. There is a melancholy tone, an overall feeling full of longing and regret. A story that unfolds rather like a non-visual cinematic piece, yet musically woven to draw the listener into his world, into his heart and mind. The music reads like a love story from a man to one special woman, yet through life paths they remain star-crossed lovers, doomed by the restrictions of this world, this life to remain apart.

Much of the content has a certain REM feel to it. "See You Tonight" possesses an ethereal quality. Delivered by Magni and his guitar, this track is haunting, captivating. The notes and tones flow as effortlessly as this song does through your mind. "Alone" steps up the tempo yet continues with the vibe of a man wandering through a time of loss, pain and the recognition that things will never be the same. I thought the mixing a little off with the bass and drums forefront, his vocals mixed behind them. "Addicted" journeys deeper into the man's mind as he reviews his status in the relationship in this work's contemplative vibe of giving and been taken.

"Let Me in the Dark" continues the tale of longing for love and intimacy with one who may not possess the ability to return that love. "World Alone" continues with this theme, vocals delivered beautifully, sensitively. Journeying into "If I promised you the World", presents a question without an answer, but a promise just the same.

"Play With Me", a song he reportedly wrote for his son, Marino, is lighter, nice piano accompaniment. It's a song with devotion to the subject, the most uplifting track of the album. This is a track that portrays his voice in a stellar light.

"Dolphin's Cry" was performed on the reality show, Rock Star: Supernova, it stands as was one of the best performances on that show. Magni includes it on the bonus track, with this version taken 'live' from a concert he held in his homeland, Iceland. There is enthusiastic audience participation, and for a live rendition shows the man has such real and true talent, no extra mixing required on his vocals.

What a great review and so true. This CD is just awesome, I still listen to it every day, depending on my mood which songs I listen to at the time but they're all on my playlist.
