Music Review: Made Out of Babies - The Ruiner - Page 2

“Cooker,” the album’s first track, leaps out directly with a Tool-esque tangled riff and the misshapen vocals sound like an animal dying. The song blasts through the elegant disarray, moving the song into somewhat of a mantra with its lashing chords and rising tension. Christmas works call-and-response with her guitarist, who tosses in some depraved shouts for good measure.

The post-hardcore clank continues on through great tracks like “Invisible Ink” and “Peew,” the latter of which is a two-and-a-half minute scorcher with tuned-down guitars and sludgy production.

The Ruiner features marathon metal, too, as is evidenced on “The Major” and “Stranger.” The screams aren’t toned down, but the song structure is a little more prolonged and cautiously constructed. The instrumentations are striking in their care.

Made Out of Babies have created a satisfying shocker with The Ruiner. With Julie Christmas taking things to another vocal level and the rest of the band standing alongside her, this album makes for one hell of a show of solidarity.

Just keep an eye on your car, okay?

Made Out of Babies - The Ruiner

Just caught wind of this band recently from a top releases list for heavy music, and the name intrigued me. With a name like that, I took them seriously. And after listening to this album, it is justified. You won't hear this kind of music often. The vocalist sounds like she's set you on fire and is dancing around you chanting - but in a good way.
