Lil Wayne is one of the greatest rappers of his era. His sixth album, Tha Carter III, is easily a top ten greatest hip-hop album. The album has collaborations from star studded artists such as Busta Rhymes, Kanye West, T-Pain, and Robin Thicke just to name a few. Though lil Wayne has always been a big name in the hip-hop world, this album set him over the top with mainstream music.
Dwayne Carter, aka Lil Wayne, released his first solo album, Tha Block I Hot, at age 17 under Cash Money Records. The album went double platinum and put Lil Wayne on the map. His fourth and fifth albums were called Tha Carter and Tha Carter II, and in my opinion are what set him apart from other rappers and made him a household name.
The album was released on June 10, 2008 under Cash Money/Universal records. It is three times platinum just in the United States alone and has sold more the three million copies. It was nominated for eight Grammy awards, winning four awards, including Best Rap Album of the year.
On the album, “Dr. Carter” is a song beyond its time. It consists of Lil Wayne rapping to revive hip-hop. The beat doesn’t go unnoticed from his rhymes scheme which sounds like old school jazz involving a snare drum, bass, horns and various other instruments. It has a mellow vibe that gradually builds as the song progresses. The song is about him, as a doctor trying to revive hip-hop music, but the catch is hip-hop in the song is an actual patient.
If you listen closely to the song you can hear that he points out how some rappers are today and how hip-hop music needs him to survive. You’d think he's being cocky in the song but, as one of the hottest artist in the music industry, you can probably say whatever you want and get away with it. It is kind of genius how the song builds up to the climatic ending as he tries to save hip-hop.

Lil Wayne is definitely one of the greatest hip-hop acts of all time. I love his experimental way of branching out into other genres as well, while remaining true to his hip-hop roots.

Who the hell wrote this? It's like Elliott Jones walked into Best Buy, looked at the CD rack at the front of the aisle and decided he could write an article about hip hop.
