Music Review: Kenny Loggins - How About Now

What is not to love about Kenny? This guy has been around for a million years, and just keeps on going and going. We loved the Top Gun theme music, we tapped our feet to Footloose; this guy is a keeper! Kenny Loggins has entertained us with his ever evolving style for quite a few years. He may not be as hip as Alan Jackson or Toby Keith, but he has the ability to captivate the listener.

How About Now is an interesting compilation of works. It showcases the wide range of Kenny Loggins' abilities. My co-reviewer (AKA my wife Jan) preferred the slow and tearful songs, while I preferred the more up-beat and rock and roll tunes. It is always difficult to produce an album that appeals to everyone. Certainly Jan and I did not agree: I listen to enjoy the music, Jan listens to cry along with the lyrics!

I thought "That’s When I Find You" was an outstanding track. The band is tight, the backing vocals are almost reminiscent of classic Motown. This is a song that just drags you into the moment.

"Too Much (I Never Get Enough)" is another great track, it reminded me of Footloose; it has the same rhythm and urgency in the delivery. If you can keep your feet still while listening to this, you have better skills than I have.

Of course it would not be fair to exclude Jan in this review, her favorite tracks included:

"A Love Song" this is the classic country song that has been ‘spruced up’ with some fine backing musicians. There is no doubt in my mind that this is the perfect tune to play when you invite that hot date in ‘for one last drink’.

"One Last Goodbye Song" is a soulful tune, it is well written, and the execution is amazingly well done. We get to see the range of Kenny Loggins’ voice. One moment he is the raspy country singer, the next a well seasoned performer.

This may not be ground breaking music, but I certainly liked it. Usually there are only one or two tracks on a CD that appeal to the listener, however almost everyone can find something that they like on this CD. The Kenny Loggins web site features "How About Now" and all of the tracks are available online. This is a great idea; you can try before you buy!

I was a little disappointed, but I'm hoping the new songs will grow on me with time.

A song for everyone...I really like "Truth Is" which sounds like Kenny doing a Richard Marx tune with the Nashville boys. Can't wait for Richie to come out with his CD on this same label.

Kenny Loggins has delivered perhaps his most powerful and impacting pearls of wisdom in this CD, How About Now, released February 2007. The lyrics tell the story of an evolution, from raw open wounds to hope to healing to attained wisdom and continued evolution of soul. Kenny Loggins exists in this world with the wisdom to employ his heart through each emotion, to tell and retell his losses and his triumphs and to do it with brilliantly thought out musical accompaniment and lyrics that will touch the soul of anyone who has ever been there.

This is a beautiful piece of work with five easy new hits and a revisit of one of his early ones.
