There are three periods which every man that traverses through time need to reflect upon. These periods include: our mornings, our afternoons; and the evenings. If we travel through life without appreciating our pasts, or even privileged present, we’d better be assured that the future is certain to be futile.
In Heart and Soul, Kenny G attempts to capture one’s sentiment with his personal journey.
Armed with his renowned saxophone; Kenny dishes out differing mixture of tunes to express that heartfelt gratitude, for all that period which had influenced his life whilst growing up. Such a time when many would rather wish never existed or even mentioned. But Kenny’s ability to look back with a positive outlook has been instrumental in the production of Heart and Soul.
In his own words, “When I think back to my days in high school and my musical start, I get a special feeling, and this new recording is my tribute to that feeling.”
Actually Kenny G is one of the reasons why the love for wind instruments still holds a high place in some people’s hearts. This Platinum Selling, Multi-award winning ‘Sax-man’ as I dubbed him is one of the remaining few bearing the Jazz and Blues-Soul music legacy, with his soprano saxophone: since the days of legends like Grover Washington Jnr. et al.
Heart and Soul features an ensemble of his dedicated band and a cream of male household RnB songwriters, composers, and producers like Walter Afanasieff, Kenny ‘BabyFace’ Edmonds and Robin Thicke. The outcome is only better imagined, from the steady background acoustic ballads to the serenading lyrical sounds from Kenny’s saxophone; the sinews and soul would find themselves losing their stress in a dose of therapeutic calm. If there were appropriate words to capture the mood of musical notes throughout the album, I’d just say ‘brilliant’. There are no clear favourites for me in the tracks but all are signature Kenny G’s handiwork. All you need do is get in the groove.
After all instrumental Jazz music to the soul is like soothing balm to a wound!
