Music Review: Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Has he finally gotten his act together? Well, Kanye West’s adoring fans insist that he is back on track and in familiar territory with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Listeners may see the all too familiar odd form of West, thanks to the support of some of his buddies.

Kanye West—the quintessential douchebag and noxious character par excellence who may have antagonized more people than anyone could have in a single lifetime—may have gone full circle in his latest album. Some even sheepishly declare that if he keeps this up, he may be up for a long overdue adulation.

Like it or not, Kanye West will always be a strong force, albeit in an irritating manner, in these morally conscious times. One cannot help but see him as the cunning predator, adorned with all the sparkles and glitters, who loves to live the good life to the fullest.

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is indeed the epitome of everything that is dark and twisted, but this time, Kanye gives it in a charming way. And for those who are into some serious Kanye-bashing, this may not be a good time to pick a fight with this “egocentric” creature.

This Kanye slbum, which reportedly racked up a $3 million budget, boasts a stellar lineup and is spiced up by the presence of Fergie of the famed Black Eyed Peas. The release is a perfect mix of musical talent and overblown ego, creating what could be the hands down album of the year (even if it was released late last year). However, some pundits believe, and I am inclined to agree with them, that this one is definitely different from 808s and Heartbreak, which was a synth-steeped response to the much ballyhooed 2008 break between Kanye West and Alexis Phifer and the tragic demise of his mother.

Starting on a high note is the brightest cut in this album, "All of the Lights," which features an ensemble of some of the big names in the music scene. These include Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Elton John, Kid Cudi, Fergie, Charlie Wilson, Tony Williams, John Legend, Ryan Leslie, The Dream and Elly Jackson. While this one could be enough reason for me to give the project a two thumbs up, I still cannot understand the reason why Rihanna took a more substantial role than the others. Judging from her performance, I’d say that it wasn’t a wise move.

Surely there are disparate views from both sides of the fence, but one thing is sure: My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is his best performance so far and even the Kanye-bashers may have no other choice but to follow him this time around.
