The band have no got the instantaneous feel to them like Opeth, but they are on their way to make a jaw-dropping album. The epic feeling on tracks like "Wake up Lost" truly drag you in and enthrall. A pleasant discovery it has to be said.
Dearestazazel: Be Mine
Wee change of pace here. Despite the un-pronounceable and pain the arse name of this band, they are quite fun. Think a combination of Orgy, New Order, Gary Numan and a bit of Styx in equal measure. It's simply steeped in 80s synth pop; you can just imagine a whole bunch of people dancing very badly to this in their naff 80's clothes. "Dead, All Dead" is a bit gothy but still eminently bouncy. What reminds me of Styx, besides the Lawrence Gowan quality of the lead singers voice, is a bit of lurking heaviness. This is certainly not Erasure or its camp ilk, far more gravitas. After all the heaviness I tend to review, this is all quite fun.
There is something recognizable but at the same new about this lot. There is a bite in the lyrics if you listen but that is part of the fun. A change of name and this lot might have quite a future ahead of them.
The Keith Reid Project: The Common Thread
The lyricist behind "Whiter Shade of Pale" and all of Procul Harum's music Keith Reid has invited a bunch of mates to record a bunch of his songs. With voices ranging from the awesome John Waite who has fronted Bad English, The Babys and his own career to Chris Thompson of Manfred Mann fame. There is the original version of "You're the Voice" taken to a hit by John Farnham appears on here. This is pure middle of the road pap but done well with a bunch of talented people playing it. One for a relaxing day at the beach methinks.
Well that is your varied lot for this week. Ranging from the darkness tinged to the chirpy positive, all have been fun to listen to. Please have a safe week and check out live music when you get a chance.
