However, the most memorable track on here which has that instantly catchy he is so well known for is “California”. Its stick in your head for days type of music and clearly shows the man knows how to pen a cracking tune with best of em’. The whole household liked something on this CD, which is saying something.
Yes, that Kip Winger is still pumping out great songs. This is probably his most impressive solo release to date. In some ways you could argue it’s the best thing he has ever been associated with. Pure class all the way through.
Omnium Gatherum: The Red Shift
Another gothy sounding gang-like melodic death outfit from Finland, especially on the track “No Breaking Point”. What the hell is in the water there anyway? This band have been moving up the ranks of the genre with their something extra variation on the theme. There is something going here that has not quite made it to the surface. Many bands peddle the same sort of music, but they do it well and try to make it their own. The afore-mentioned track is the type of thing that work well on the goth/darkwave dancefloors that dot the world’s major cities.
I quite like this, but admit that it does not necessarily grab one instantly. There is a catchiness here that does not seem to fit the “melodic death” mold, I mean the track “The Return” is actually quite catchy. It's got a rather jaunty feel to it that makes you want to get up and move. There is something to said for all the tracks on the release. There is nothing that is rubbish and they seem to be keen to not be locked into their genre in any way.
There is no wonder this lot are getting a lot of attention from the Euro-metal press. Yes they are “'a grouping of all things'” that is for sure.
Plan9: Manmade Records
A healthy mixture of the Misfits, which is not a shock as they started out as a Misfits tribute band, and tongue-in-cheek humour make this lot quite a bit of fun. It's punky and a bit Elvis mixed in there for swagger appeal. The guys have the chops live as well as local heroes and Misfit fans Metallica routinely check these guys out when they are in their home town of San Francisco. The band features former Misfits amongst its membership.
