The soundtrack to Julian Temple's film about the late Joe Strummer The Future Is Unwritten is a must have for any Clash fan. Released under Legacy Recordings, this CD is full of Clash songs and songs from influences of Joe Strummer making for a very enjoyable listen. The film itself is a documentary about the life of Joe Strummer and proves to be more of a personal celebration remembrance as Julian Temple actually had developed a close personal friendship with the late legend. The film has been nominated as an official selection for the 2007 Sundance Film Festival as well as the 2007 Dublin Film Festival. Critics have praised the film that will premier in theaters on May 18th, 2007.
As many know Joe Strummer, the “Punk Rock Warlord”, was the lead vocalist of the UK punk pioneers The Clash. After much success the band eventually broke up in 1986 and all of the members parted ways (yes, there is a lot more to this). Joe Strummer tried his luck with acting, crossed paths with former band mates, and even produced the soundtrack for Sid & Nancy the movie.
In 1989 Joe Strummer decided to give music a try again and throughout the years became Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros. In 2002 days before Christmas, Joe Strummer passed away from a congenital heart defect at the age of 50. The sudden death shocked the world and his memory lives on for many punk rock appreciating fans.
If you need one reason alone to buy this soundtrack, then here it is: The Clash performing live Joe Strummer's "(In The) Pouring Rain". Not only is the song amazing, but it also never made it to any album before. Need another reason? How about taking a listen to Joe Strummer with backing band Latino Rockabilly War performing the cut “Trash City”. I must admit that I had never knew of that combination, but rest assured I’ll be looking for more of that material next time I go CD hunting.
