Music Review: Hot Picks for June - The Detroit Cobras, Esinchill, Dear Life & More

Part of: Brandon's Hot Picks

ZZ Top -  Live From Texas

From the opening menu featuring a faux ticket stub to the song selection, ZZ Top’s first ever official DVD is essential viewing. It’s not the first of its kind but the DVD, available in Blu-Ray format, is a standout example of how good a concert can be from the comfort of home as opposed to the grainy concert VHS tapes of the past.

Culled from performances in their home state of Texas, all of ZZ Tops mega-hits are included. From the early career, blues rhythms of “Tush” and “Jesus Just Left Chicago” to the Mtv staples “Legs” and “Sharp Dressed Man” all of the eras of ZZ Tops' career are covered.

The bonus features include an interview with the band conducted over a game of poker and bonus live footage of the band ripping through the Jimi Hendrix rave up “Foxy Lady”

The band's stage show is minimal with the camera angles focusing mainly on their instrument skills and the long practiced choreography of Billy Gibson and Dusty Hill whose bass lines come through particularly well in the DVD’s audio mix.

Ultimately, this is a visual treat for fans new and old and highlights the staying power of solid songs and a mean set of facial hair. (Release Date June 24th)

Esinchill - The Fury

Esinchill has been a name to watch out for ever since his vocals graced the Digital Underground “Wind Me Up” back in ’98. After dropping one outstanding solo joint, Everything to Lose, the Oakland based rapper has been laying low. Now as the world continues to spin, Esinchill is back with a fury of opinions, banging new joints. This E.P. is just a prelude to his next solo disc but is worth tracking down if you want to hear what will be the future of Oakland’s rap scene. Check out this link for more info.
