Music Review: Holy Moses - Agony Of Death

Part of: Eurorock

If you are looking for the ultimate definition of Thrash Metal then look no further than the Holy Moses Myspace profile page. It is the obvious place to look when you consider that Holy Moses all but defined the movement since forming an incredible twenty eight years ago. Since that date they have remained at the very forefront of everything Thrash Metal is about.

So what do Holy Moses, pioneers of Thrash Metal, say of themselves and the music they produce? "Thrash Metal is no temporary phenomenon of fashion, no cross-product, no circus act. Actually it’s the total opposite: Thrash Metal is a way of life, a philosophy, where a musician is involuntary driven to the music and just can’t escape. Real Thrashers celebrate this music style passionately their whole lives, totally committed, and with a strong conviction".

Formed in Aachen, Germany in 1980 Holy Moses is led by the remarkable Sabina Classen. The ‘female vocalist from hell’ has fronted this band through the decades with an energy level that is almost unworldly. This, their twelfth studio album, Agony Of Death (SPV/Wacken Records September 2008) carries their heritage forward with all the aforementioned passion and commitment.

Their landmark albums would arguably include Finished With The Dogs (1987) and The New Machine Of Liechtenstein two years later. A short break occurred from 1995 to 1999 during which Sabina formed Temple Of The Absurd. However since Holy Moses re-appeared they have re-established themselves right at the top of Thrash touring almost constantly and appearing at all the major metal festivals.

If you need any confirmation of the ‘way of life’ comment above then check out their tour schedule and remember the energy levels we are talking of here. North America is next in early 2009. If you a Thrash metal fan, you should be there.
