The UK’s Goldrush has recently released The Heart Is The Place under Better Looking Records, a follow-up to the 2005 US debut album Ozona. Formed in Oxford, England the foursome has been around for years putting out albums that have gathered a lot of overseas attention. Their latest release was produced by producer / musician James Rutledge (Dangermouse, Kevin Shields) who helped Goldrush put out this release after many had thought they threw in the towel due to a two year hiatus.
While listening to The Heart Is The Place, I was immediately reminded of The Flaming Lips. Their lead vocalist Robin Bennett, has a voice so similar to Wayne Coyne that I had to check the CD insert to make sure that he did not guest appear on the disc. Musically they have their own style with sounds comparable to the likes of the Doves, My Morning Jacket, and Wilco.
Once the opening instrumental finishes, “The Story Of The City Starts”. Did I mention the lead singer reminds my of Wayne from the Flaming Lips? Beyond that the song is a nice tune to listen to. “Every One Of Us” was one of the tracks that reminded me of the Doves musically and had repeating lyrics that stunk in my head. I can definitely see this song getting some college radio play.
The song “24 Hours” almost sounds like it was created back in the 70s. The piano reminded me of something Sir Elton John might have created in his younger years. The rest of the song although a little on the psychedelic side was a great song. The band may be considered an indie rock band, but they manage to delude their said genre and create admirable music.
