I have eclectic taste in music. I like to listen to bands like Enya, Sheryl Crow, and Fleetwood Mac to the White Stripes, Green Day, and Nirvana. I grew up listening to the music from the 80s and I still love to hear songs from the Thompson Twins and Blondie.
That being said, when I first heard Goldfrapp a few years ago after Black Cherry and Supernatural came out, I was in love. They had that new wave, new age type of music that was right up my alley! I would listen to the two albums over and over and over again until my friends and co-workers started to hum the tunes when we weren’t even listening!
I saw Goldfrapp at Roseland in New York City. The concert was great, a real show! Each song had an amazing performance and kept the audience engaged.
When Seventh Tree came out, I became less interested in the group and didn’t give them much thought, until I heard Headfirst, their 5th album. The new album made me bop my head and tap my toes. This album is the Goldfrapp I know and love!
Released on March 23, 2010, Headfirst’s songs are all upbeat, fun, and great dance music. It has a euphoric, fantasy-like sound that simply makes me feel good when I listen to it. There are nine songs that were written and performed by Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory.
The single, "Rocket," is catchy and accessible. Actually, most of the songs on the album are accessible. My least favorite is the last song, “Voicething.” Interestingly, this is the song that Rolling Stone magazine thought was the best song on the album. The song is a series of “ohm’s” and other sounds/samples that are repetitive and totally monotonous. It’s the only song on the album, I find annoying. The press release also makes note that the song is unlike any other on the album.
