Music Review: FLO - Romance, Chill, and Standards - Page 2

Fans of classic jazz may appreciate FLO: Standards the most.  As the album title suggests, this CD features covers of an impressive array of jazz classics.  Once again Johnson gives these songs the smooth jazz treatment.  “My Funny Valentine” fares better here, this version being done at a slightly faster tempo with drummer Lenny Robinson providing a deceptively simple samba beat.  “Goodbye Porkpie Hat,” a Charles Mingus composition, also benefits from Robinson’s skill as well as Johnson’s soulful solos.  Not all smooth jazz treatments work well with the standards, as “Green Dolphin Street” loses some of its bluesy swagger.  In contrast, “Yesterdays” swings with its rapid tempo and deft piano playing.  This track best demonstrates the artistic abilities of FLO’s musicians.

The bottom line: if you are in the mood for soft, relaxing smooth jazz, Marcus Johnson’s FLO project serves that purpose.  Romance, Chill, and Standards all function as good, inoffensive background music, perfect for cocktail or dinner parties.  If you prefer an intense, challenging listening experience, look elsewhere.

FLO albums are available only through Circuit City and iTunes.  For more information, visit FLO’s official site and MySpace page.  Marcus Johnson has two sites: one for his own music label, the other his official artist site
