The title song, “Raised On Rock,” is just great rock ‘n’ roll. Elvis had moved in a pop direction in his post movie career, and songs like this one were all too few and far between. A bass foundation, terrific guitar lines and Elvis’ vocal above the mix all added up to a great lost song in the Elvis catalogue. “If You Don’t Come Back” is another nice rock song, complete with wah-wah guitar and a solid rhythm foundation.
Elvis also provides several tasty ballads on this album. “I Miss You” features a sincere vocal by Elvis on this song of loss. Listen for some wonderful guitar lines by James Burton. “For Ol’ Times Sake,” written by Tony Joe White of “Polk Salad Annie” fame, is a subtle ballad of regret. “Just A Little Bit” is given a fine rhythm & blues interpretation by Elvis.
Raised On Rock/For Ol’ Times Sake may not be a consistently excellent album, but it certainly contains a number of performances that are still worth seeking out.

The "Fool" album is perhaps one of Elvis Presley's most underrated and overlooked LP's of his career. I know some people wanted Elvis to always record nothing but rock songs, but he personally wanted to be known as a great ballad singer, and not just a Rock 'n Roll icon. This album certainly shows off his great vocal skills since it contains rare ballads that allowed Elvis to project unique vocal skills from strictly pure emotion, especially during this time of his career (early 70's) when he went through so much personally (separation from Priscilla, nagging health issues, lack of freedom because of the controlling Col. Parker and "friends" who were a little too close to his private life including his dealings with Priscilla which even she has admitted). It is simply amazing how Elvis never hid his feelings, but poured them out in songs like Fool, Love Me, Love the Life I Lead, Padre, It's Still Here, Are You Sincere, I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen and Where Do I Go From Here. This album should have been a top ten hit, but RCA's lack of promotion of Elvis' music during the 70's(their attitude was that they were already making money off of Elvis's name and past achievments so why bother?), made this album fail as far as the billboard charts are concered, but it did not fail as a great performance vocally and musically. It is too bad the front cover features a concert photo of Elvis as did most of his new albums in the 70's (except for 1974's Live on Stage in Memphis), because it gave DJ's the false impression that "Elvis put out nothing but concert albums during the 70's") which was a common opinion back then and is why they never played his new albums on the radio with this false theory in mind. However, the "Fool" album proves that not every album or single has to be a hit to be considered "great". As matter of fact, his vocal performance on this LP is far superior than some of the performances he put forth on more "successful" albums and this is why it remains a collector's item among fans.
