The French Grammy award-winning electronic duo Daft Punk score the film TRON: Legacy, along with a 85-piece symphonic orchestra. The result is a soundtrack worthy of the legacy of TRON.
The mixture of orchestral and electronic/digital elements combine seamlessly to create the perfect aural atmosphere to the universe of TRON. I have yet to watch the film TRON: Legacy, but the soundtrack does seem epic enough to be fitting to the world that the movie hopes to recreate in the minds of the viewers.
The music doesn't suffer from the excesses of electronic sound and is well balanced with the non-electronic sounds of the orchestra. The tracks are short and I thought that worked well in their favour. I wouldn't have them any other way.
It starts out with "Overture", a strong orchestral theme that is as different as anything that Daft Punk have ever come up with. It is a perfect introduction for us listeners into this new experiment of Daft Punk, the union of string and synth.
Throughout the soundtrack, it is this balance that is noticed the most. The interplay of string and synth is probably at its best in "Disc Wars".
The tune "Recognizer" probably has more string than synth, and it echoes of great soundtracks of other epic films. It is the perfect companion piece to any film hoping to evoke awe.
"Rinzler" gets the soundtrack back to a more powerful synth, backed up by cellos. But "Derezzed" is probably the closest to what Daft Punk fans are used to, minimally adulterated digital music. It is tunes like this thrown amongst more symphonic ones that allow us to observe and appreciate the magnitude of what Daft Punk have been able to create here.
As a fan of electronic music, the only minor complaint I have is that it could have afforded to have a little more of the Daft Punk quirkiness. But, it is spectacular nevertheless.
As a fan of soundtracks, there is nothing to not love in this soundtrack. It is soaring. It is epic. And it inspires.
