Colour Kane evolved out of the trip pop project known as Abricot. Bruno Kimpe, and Joeri Gyde have been joined by the silky smooth vocal talents of Marjan Snykers to form Colour Kane. Marjan’s voice is at times unreal, floating in at you from some unseen dimension.
The music moves us to a position akin to sitting somewhere between the shifting emotions that take us from melancholy, one minute, to full on world wonder the next.
The opening, “A Taste Of”, the ethereal track “This”, and the chiming “Eve Drops” all act as the perfect introduction for the journey you are about to embark on. Then comes “A Kiss In A Lowland’s Meadow” and, it is as if, you are transported inside the canvass of a Flemish master’s work of art.
The album is gently yet persuasively driven by some artistic bass lines, and nicely balanced electronic beat. “Love Hurdles” is another impressive example of this. When “Unseen” comes to an unexpected and sudden stop it opens a door into the highly satisfying and aptly named “Astonish”.
Now this is where I could easily use the term ‘blissed-out’, as the next section of the album is triumphantly stimulating. The glorious five minutes that make up the stand out, “Share My Ease” build slowly, until bursting into an anthemic ending of highly satisfying proportions.
“Silya” grasps that mood and seduces a little more, dreamy, anthem, from it swirling above a gently ringing guitar. “Seaside Dream”, mixed by Robin Guthrie, is all of those words that I banned myself from using in my opening paragraph. So instead I will opt to try and describe it as an all too short, yet lush, rich, compelling, floating dreamscape of a piece.
By now, as you have probably guessed, the album’s addictive compulsiveness has taken hold. It has succeeded in seducing frayed senses and lifting them away from day to day concerns before landing somewhere altogether more satisfying. The album is a trip well worth taking for anyone who appreciates experimental, electronic, dream pop at its finest.
There are many levels beyond the flat horizon of the Flemish lowlands. If you can’t see them yourself, Colour Kane will push open the clouds and take you there.
