Music Review: Chris Tomlin - And If Our God Is For Us

With nine number one radio singles, three GRAMMY nominations, sixteen Dove Awards, a platinum and two gold albums to his credit, Chris Tomlin is among the most well-known artists in contemporary Christian music.  This week, Tomlin delivers his seventh recording in a rather quaint title, And If Our God Is For Us.

From the very first single in the album, “Our God,” he serves up an operatic-pop version of the Passion CD. This is sort of a continuation from where he last ended the conversation on the previously successful project.

Known for inspirational, thoughtful, and honest worship music over the years, Tomlin has invested a similar zest in his new project with engaging standout singles any God worshipper can connect with easily throughout the whole length of And If Our God Is For Us.

Another standout single, “I Will Follow,” has already become a radio hit, immediately taking root in the hearts of listeners with its powerful message propelled by Tomlin’s upbeat delivery. Another of the highlights of the new album is “Majesty Of Heaven,” which is a simple worship song on an acoustic guitar.

As an accomplished singer/songwriter, Tomlin has carved out a unique niche for himself in what I'd call a definitive Tomlin worship-styled music. He always manages to connect with his audience in most of his songs.

“No Chains On Me” shows a different side of Tomlin’s musical personality which he penned with Matt Redman.

In addition to writing with frequent collaborators like Redman, Tomlin also stepped outside his comfort with new co-writers like Jason Ingram for “Lovely.”

Tomlin especially delivers on such powerful tunes as “I Lift My Hands,” written alongside of Louie Giglio. It reflects the picture of someone reaching out to God and saying, "Lord, I’m just remembering your faithfulness and I just need you now in my life. I’ve seen your faithfulness through the years of my life and I’m calling out again, I lift my hands to believe again."

I wouldn't be surprised to find most of the tracks on this album quickly becoming another church chorus at a church near me, simply because they not only make good sense but are exquisitely like reading the Scriptures.
