The soundtrack for the movie Catch and Release is a great collection of music. Not only do the songs go well with the movie, they make great listening on their own. All the songs work well together and while there are stand out songs, it’s like a well-loved mixed tape. You just couldn’t have one without the other.
This is a collection of mostly American bands doing mellow songs. The tempo of the CD is calm, with no screaming or jarring guitars to shake you up. It makes peaceful easy listening. The music on the CD deals mostly with love, heartbreak, and waiting. All those emotions that go well with a romantic comedy/drama.
While all the music is great, a few of the songs stand out. Joshua Radin’s ‘What if You’ is beautiful and haunting, the kind of song you hit the repeat button on. His voice is moving. It fits the movie well but it's even better when you take it away from the movie to listen to it whole on your own.
‘Razor’ by the Foo Fighters is another soft and haunting melody that fits the opening scenes of the movie. For those of us who remember The Lemonheads, their song ‘My Drug Buddy’ is another good fit. ‘Turning Blue’ by The Swallows is fantastic. I had never heard anything of theirs until this release; I will now have to buy their CD as soon as possible.
The more I listen to this album the more I like it. Even if you haven’t seen and loved the movie, this is a CD worth adding to your collection. Not to mention its worthiness as an introduction to some bands you might not have heard before.

The Magic Numbers track is one of the highlights from their debut album: very skiffle band . . .
