Indie singer-songwriter Cary Brothers, who first gained widespread recognition with his gorgeous ballad "Blue Eyes" on the Garden State soundtrack, will release his full-length debut, Who You Are, on May 29, 2007.
Full of tales of love fulfilled or unrequited, the album showcases Brothers' gift for pleasing melodies and nuanced vocal delivery. In fact, his rich, clear voice may be his greatest asset. On the opening track, the dynamic "Jealousy," Brothers effortlessly climbs from a subdued verse to a soaring, impassioned chorus. On the delicate ballad "Honestly," his voice dovetails beautifully with piano and strings.
For all of Brothers' talent, though, Who You Are suffers from the innocuousness that pervades the second half of the album. The first half shines with up-tempo, alt-pop gems like "The Last One," which recalls some late '80s Cure, and the first single, "Who You Are," as well as "Jealousy," the atmospheric "Ride," and "Honestly." But with the exception of "Think Awhile," the second half of the album, which closes with two plodding ballads, manages to do little more than serve as a segue into a nap.

There are a few solid songs, but the mawkish balladry weighs down the album. In fact, since I initially reviewed the album, I've come to like it less.

I actually like the record more the more I listen. The up tempo tracks are amazing and the other tunes are great night music. They're not ballads in a traditional sense, as the dynamics make them more powerful than most one note ballads I hear these days.
