When UK’s Classic Rock magazine labels a CD "the debut album of the year" my ears tend to stick up like my pet dog’s. Big Linda – yes, it sounds sleazy – is the band's name. I Loved You – is the album. Bright – is their future.
Based in London they have, up until this point, been a well kept but rapidly spreading secret. Their formation reads like a convoluted set of circumstances with members growing up in Hong Kong, Birmingham, Italy, and elsewhere but clearly they were meant to be. Their name brings all sorts of sleazy connotations to mind (well it does for me anyway!) but it works. Remember Thin Lizzy – well now we have Big Linda, and who's complaining.
Big Linda, the band, may be coming to your notice quicker than you think. Two of their songs are due to be included in major films this year. They cover The Who’s, “The Seeker” in the film of the same name starring Christopher Eccleston and Ian McShane. They also have the self-penned “Get It While You Can,” which will be heard in the film The Passenger which stars Ewan MacGregor.
When drummer Geoff Holroyde started jamming with guitarist Patrick Murdoch in London, the cast was slowly being set. At this point a ‘mystery third party’ arranged for them to get over to Antigua to record and at the airport they met Italian Vezio Bacci who plays bass. During their time in Antigua they chose the band name…. best not ask.
When they got back to London they began trying out a host of singers before they spotted Rob Alder sitting in the corner of the studio. He looked like a young pre-Miami Jim Morrison and sounded great too. The band had finally come together.
The album I Loved You is expertly produced by Paul Stanley whose credits include Oasis. He has done a wonderful job stuffing all the energy generated by the band into the can without losing any of its immediacy. As a result I Loved You announces Big Linda’s arrival like a Stock Exchange bell, except this lot are on the up.
