Music Review: Bebo Norman - OCEAN

The impact of having a personal spiritual retreat is often overlooked by many. Regardless of our intentions, such periods are times when one is free to be you before God. It aids an atmosphere to rebuild one's esteem, confidence. In other words, it's a time of intensive therapy. But when such therapy help puts you in front of a mirror like Bebo Norman had to undergo — a clear look back through his own window at a story God is telling — the result is certain to be awesome.  Such therapy known also as making a new album, is an exercise in discovery that Bebo takes to remarkable depths on his seventh studio project, Ocean. This Dove Award winning contemporary christian artist, with a couple of chart busting records over the years, has carved a niche for himself as a consistent folk /poetic voice that tell stories of God's love, grace and hope.

Ocean opens with a sweet ballad under smooth-rocking beats which steadily walks listeners through the poppy grained expression of devotion in "Everything I Hoped You'd Be", this intro paves way for a pop/funk "Here Goes". Going along the lines of confronting life's challenges rather than scuttling off; "we never learn anything without first making mistakes." That is, we need to learn to look to God for He alone knows the next step to takeMy favorite track happens to be the praise-tinged and melodious "God of My Everything" rehearsing the magnanimity of God's awesomeness.

You're sure to swing to the anthemic mix of the acoustic instruments and the piano. The title track "Ocean" reminds one of the story of the biblical Enoch, who decided to stay back with God in paradise rather than returning to his home. It speaks about a life that longs to be absolved and absorbed in all that God's got to offer in place of the worries of life. With other evangelical tunes, an invitation to tasting God and folk themed lyrics, Ocean is sure to bless our souls.
