Music Review: Barenaked Ladies - Snacktime

Parents! There is finally a children's CD that does not want to make you pull your hair out after five minutes!

Barenaked Ladies have put together a 24-track CD that will keep you and your children entertained, if only to see what they are going to sing next.

They begin with "7 8 9," a song composed around the riddle, "Why is 6 afraid of 7? Because seven ate nine." It will make you chuckle.

If you liked Barenaked Ladies' "If I Had a Million Dollars," you will love some of these equally crazy songs. For example, "My Big Sister" tells the tale of a young boy drawing the line at wearing his sister's coat. "Allergies" and "Eraser" are also classic BNL.

"The Canadian Snacktime Trilogy" is initially a ballad written about everyone being in harmony over the importance of snacktime. Part 1 drags when people call in to report their favorite snacks. However, it is cleverly done in such a way that you do not know the people calling in are celebrities. Some of the callers were: Lyle Lovett, Sarah McLachlan, and Gordon Lightfoot. Unfortunately, Part 2, "Popcorn" was just incredibly annoying. There is no way to sing "pop" fifty times in a row and make it interesting. Part 3, "Vegetable Town" was very cute. Overall, however, this title song was the least enjoyable.

My favorite song on the CD is "I Don't Like." The first line is "I can eat pork 'til the cows come home" and features a bunch of likes and dislikes with hysterical dialogue about why he does not like certain things.

The songs are clever, mostly short, and attention-grabbing. Except for a few mildly irritating repetitive lyrics, this is a CD that you could play on long car trips and enjoy the sound that is pure BNL.

Your review made me laugh. The popcorn song was one of my favourites.
