Dancehall king Cham (aka Baby Cham) is in full stride with his latest effort, Ghetto Story. The well known Jamaican deejay has recently dropped the "Baby" from his name, but that seems to be all he lost as he drops this blazing album. Fans of Cham must add this one to their collection, as it is packed with tight riddims, A-list feature artists checking in, and Cham ripping through some of his hottest songs.
The highly featured toaster has added his deep voice, distinctive "wooaah rraaaahh" and rapid fire lyrics to several reggae, R&B, and hip-hop classics. Who can forget the Foxy Brown club banger "Tables Will Turn," or Baby Cham's "Vitamin S"? His vocals were absolutely necessary on Mim's "This Is Why I'm Hot" remix and he delivers more heat with the Ghetto Story album, with the title track being one of his biggest songs to date.
His climb to the top has been a long one, but this album may have finally given him the commercial boost he has been looking for. To be fair, this review is a bit late. The album dropped back in 2006, shortly after the thunderous sounds of Jr. Gong's Welcome To Jamrock began its reign on reggae clubs and radio.
Cham's contribution to the summer of '06 earned its spot in play-list history, as Ghetto Story would go on to get nods from Rolling Stone and Vibe magazines Top 100 Songs of the Year sheets, at a respectable 14th and 7th place! Cham was nominated for a few awards as well, including Best Collabo and Rookie of the Year at BET Music Awards and favorite International Artist for the MTVU. It's safe to say his story has been well received.
