Music Review: Alvin and the Chipmunks:The Squeakquel Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Do you remember Alvin and the Chipmunks? Since the original television show was first created in 1958 by Ross Bagdasarian Sr., it has spawned newer versions down the road due to the enormous popularity. Of course, it wouldn't be long before the Chipmunks came to the big screen. What else would you call the next movie in the sequence but Alvin and the Chipmunks:The Squeakquel?

The movie soundtrack, as to be expected, is chock full of the tiny critters doing what they do best. Singing, with every note pitched to ultrahigh levels. This time around adds the voices of the Chipettes, an all girl chipmunk singing trio. Somehow I doubt the actors who supply the characters with their voices are singing as the actual furballs. More than likely, each actor gets to have his or her voice speeded up by a computer.

"You Really Got Me" is the first out of the gate when it comes to the song lineup. It uses the voices of the Chipmunks to sing along featuring the band Honor Society. From the opening notes, the song has a head banging beat to which one can easily tap their toes.

"The Song" is the Chipettes version of their tune with an additional vocalist which is singing in a regular voice. The guest this time is Queensberry. Lots of repetition throughout ensures the selection will stick in one's head long after the song ends.

My favorite piece is probably "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record). Most likely, this version is copied off of the Dead or Alive original. The technotronic beat will make listeners want to get up and dance.

There is a point where both Chipmunks and Chipettes sing together. It's on the song "Shake Your Groove Thing". The two groups do a decent job of blending six voice qualities into one sound. I get the distinct impression, though, Alvin (voice talent of Justin Long) and Brittney (voice talent of Christina Applegate) are simply singing together rather than splitting the solo in half.

"I Gotta Feeling" is a bonus track making the total count of songs to fifteen. Yes, it's the song the Black Eyed Peas choreographed a special dance for on Oprah. This is a feel good tune which is a perfect way to lift one's spirits.

Whether one is looking for some favorites from long ago or wanting some new songs to dance jam, chances are they can be found here. Although the high pitched tones might be disconcerting to some, the beat is recognizable nonetheless.

I thought that the soundtrack was fun and catchy! But the standout is the Beyonce song! I never watched the movie, but I saw the commercial and the Chippettes version of the Grammy winning Beyonce hit just jumped out! I couldn't stop laughing at their squeaky voices over these pop songs. They even do two Max Martin-written songs, even updated versions '70s hits by the Bee Gees and Peaches and Herb. It sounds one part Black Eyed Peas, one part early 2000s boy band sounds ala NSYNC within the songs. They make the older songs have more modern current sounds and avoid disco sounding grooves at most. I like how they do You Spin Me Round, just months after FloRida had a hit in 2009 sampling that same song. There are three new songs to avoid it from being and oldies record, but they're that good. Overall, creatively done and so hilariously funny on some parts!
