Alabama Thunderpussy (ATP) has released Open Fire under Relapse Records. Formed in a basement in 1996, the Richmond, Virginia natives have created a type of rock that is not quite heavy, but definitely hard and southern. Over the last ten years they have gone through a lot of member changes, due to various reasons, but never gave up. Now on their third vocalist, ATP continues to push out albums and stand as a veteran in the metal game.
Looking at ATP almost reminds you of Lynyrd Skynyrd meets Pantera. They have a southern confederate image to them with their long hair and scruffy beards. They love to party and drink a lot which was recently proven on their video “Words Of A Dying Man” (Who was that guy in the shower?). Fans have called their musical style “Truckstop Rock”, ATP has toured all over the world with many other famous bands to very welcoming crowds. Now with their latest release, ATP are preparing their livers and getting ready to tour again.
Let me start by saying that the cover of this CD is awesome. It reminds me of something that someone might find on a random vinyl at a garage sale. I only say that because it has such an 80’s look to it. Once I put the CD in, the southern hillbilly rock started. I hate to say this, but I am no where close to being a fan of this type of music. The CD was a little bit too southern for this guy. “Moonshine metal,” as ATP has been described, is just not my drink of choice.
“Greed” was a track where the new vocalist, Kyle Thomas, really introduces his singing abilities with low to high pitches throughout the song. “Whiskey War”, probably named for their love of booze, was another song that stood out. “Words Of A Dying Man” as mentioned before is my choice cut on this album.
