Music Review: Al Green - Definitive Greatest Hits

Al Green’s Definitive Greatest Hits is a collection of hit songs from some of his best known albums. The CD, which was released on January 16, 2007 on Capitol Records, has 21 songs of Al Green’s classic hits from “Let’s Stay Together” to “Love And Happiness.”

If you think of some of the greatest soul singers of all-time, then Al Green has to be on your list. His smooth, soulful voice could set the mood for any occasion.

Al Green was born Albert Greene on April 13, 1946 in Forrest City, Arkansas. In high school Green formed a group called Al Greene & the Creations, later to be known as Al Greene & the Soul Mates, which recorded their first hit “Back Up Train” on their own label, Hot Line Music. The single was a success though other songs would not be as successful. Green’s first album Back Up Train was released in 1967 on the same label. After that Al Green would prove to be an R&B sensation with albums such as Let’s Stay Together, Call Me, and many more.

This album was designed to give you all his hits from the ones you know to others that fell under the radar. These songs take you back to the romantic side of music. From the upbeat songs such as “I Can’t Stop” to the slow jams like “I’m Still In Love With You,” this CD has it all. From the old school people to the new school like me, this is a CD that has a song for everybody, no matter what age group.

Imagine being alone and lonely, Al’s got a song for you. Imagine being with that special person, then this CD has one for you too. Al Green sets the tone with romantic music and this CD shows it. Though these are songs taken from other albums, it still brings a mixture of good songs in one CD.
